Congratulations to our Year 11 student Mia Vloedmans who won the Public Speaking Award at the Lion's Youth of the Year Zone Competition in Collinsville on Sunday.
Mia made it through the first round of the competition at the end of last month winning the Proserpine Club Competition, while our Year 12 student Hurley Diessel won the Public Speaking Division.
On Sunday, Mia delivered the same speech she delivered at the Club competition last month about her journey with Type 1 Diabetes, but came up against different impromptu questions about school attendance and preferences on being an employee or a boss.
Mia said she was grateful for the experience the Lion's Youth of the Year Competition provided.
“I've been able to improve my public speaking skills and having to think on my feet," she said.
“I also had to be up-to-date with news and current affairs for answering questions in my interview."
Bowen State High School student Ryland Gaffney won the overall zone competition that was held at the Collinsville Workers Club.
When asked if Mia would compete again in the LYOTY Competition she was confident.
“Yes, definitely. This year was just a warm up and a great opportunity to hopefully go further next year."
