Congratulations to our Debating students for winning round 2 of the Inter-school Debating Competition on Tuesday 6th of August. Our recent competition brought together Proserpine State High School and St Catherine's Catholic College students in a memorable battle of arguments and ideas.
Our event was made even more special with the presence of distinguished guests. We welcomed lawyers Alex Woods and Lynda Hughes (a PSHS alumni) from Macrossan and Amiet Solicitors and our Member For Whitsunday, the Hon Amanda Camm. All three guests, with a breadth of speaking experience and deep knowledge in the topics, were able to provide students with invaluable feedback that they can take on to improve their public speaking and debating skills.
The Junior Division of the competition ended with a draw between PSHS and SCCC. Despite being a team member down, our Year 9 students Millie Groom and Mackenzie Cantamessa impressed the judges to tie in the finals. Congratulations girls and thank you Ms Whish for coaching them.
In the Senior Division, our Year 10 students Danni Muller and Wiremu Tairaki were joined by Year 12 student Zion Holt to be crowned the overall champions, taking out the senior competition in a riveting debate on the topic ‘girls face more peer pressure than boys’. Our students demonstrated very strong team work, worldly responses and an overall compelling argument which ultimately led them to victory! A shout out to Mr Casey for coaching them through their journey. A special mention goes to our Year 11 students Mia Vloedmans, Bella Knight and Allegra Bradley who made the semi-final but were defeated in an extremely close debate.
A huge thank you to Ms Foote for organising the debating event and to all of the staff who supported our students in the lead up to and on the night. It was wonderful to see many parents and carers cheer on our students also.
